Founded on 2 February 1881, The Tribune is an Indian English-language daily newspaper. It is published from various locations, including Amritsar, Jalandhar, New Delhi, Chandigarh, and Ludhiana. It is operated by a trust of five trustees.
Editor-in-Chief
Several editors have quit or been removed from media outlets in the past few months. Most of them have maintained a distance from the NDA-led Narendra Modi government. The latest departure comes after a story about the vulnerability of the Aadhaar database. The Tribune won plaudits from privacy advocates, but the story led to criminal charges against reporter Rachna Khaira.
The story came during a Supreme Court hearing on the Aadhaar database, and proved embarrassing to the Modi government. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) called the report “misreporting” and said it was safe. However, the Tribune’s report won plaudits from privacy advocates because it alleged that the government had been exploiting the Aadhaar database to help middlemen access key personal information.
Harish Khare was the editor-in-chief of The Tribune for nearly two years, but he has recently resigned. He joined the newspaper in June 2015. He previously worked at The Hindu, the Times of India and Hindustan Times. He holds a PhD in political science from Yale University. His writings were often critical of the government.
Sources of revenue
TT Group, the parent company of Tribune Co, the media company, is looking to increase revenues by way of acquisition. Its current stable includes 23 TV stations and eight daily newspapers in the U.S., as well as its WGN America cable network. In order to determine which assets are of interest to the company, it has engaged the services of the aforementioned Evercore Partners. The company has also decided to take the plunge into the mobile ad abyss by acquiring Mobile Ad Network, the largest mobile ad company in the U.S., for a reported sum of $1 billion. TT Group’s upcoming mobile ad unit, which will be renamed to MMobile, is expected to launch later this year.
The company has also invested in a handful of digital properties. Its new digital arm, which will be led by a newly-minted VP, will focus on enhancing user experiences by implementing an enterprise platform for mobile, video and digital content. In addition, the company has also rolled out a suite of analytics tools to help optimize the customer experience. During the past few months, the company has acquired several smaller media companies, including Daily Media, Inc., the owner of the Daily News and World Report.
