5 Ways to Keep the Office Safe in a Pandemic

DenbeighBy DenbeighJanuary 25, 2022

It’s been a couple of years since the pandemic started in 2019. More and more offices are starting to come back to onsite work as the world slowly recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the situation isn’t over yet, and people continue to contract the virus from their workplaces. How do you keep your office safe in a pandemic?

The pandemic has been hard on a lot of people and businesses. As we turn things back around, we have to make changes in our normal routine to keep ourselves safe from the virus. Offices have become hotspots for the spread of infection, but that doesn’t mean that your office can ignore safety measures when dealing with business amidst the pandemic.

In this article, we’ll show you the top five (5) ways you can keep a healthy and safe work environment despite the pandemic. Keep in mind that each office will have different requirements, and it is always best to tailor these tips to your specific situation.

1. Keep It Clean

The coronavirus thrives on surfaces that have not been cleaned or sanitized properly. When someone sneezes, coughs, or touches a surface, they immediately spread the virus onto that surface. Another person could easily pick up the virus when the office is kept uncleaned for long. Offices, too, are typically enclosed spaces where the virus is more likely to spread.

Keep the office clean, organized and disinfected at all times. Ensure that communal areas, like the pantry  area, breakroom, and the bathroom, are kept neat and clean to limit the spread of infection as much as possible. Let employees exhibiting symptoms work from home or take a sick leave to prevent them from spreading the virus in the office.

However, it is understandable that offices deal with piles of work everyday, and protocols have made working together even more challenging than before. Employees will not have time to work and do the cleaning tasks – and they aren’t expected to!

Instead, hire a reputable cleaning company that offers office cleaning and sanitizing services to keep the virus at bay. Cleaning services will keep dust and allergens out of the office too, so you won’t have to second-guess every sneeze as an allergy or a cold. Offices in Singapore can reach out to Luce Office for all their cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection needs!

2. Disinfect Daily

Daily disinfection is a must for any commercial space. As soon as the last person leaves the office, it is best to schedule a professional disinfection service to properly disinfect all surfaces in the office. Professional disinfection services will be able to get to the areas where you might miss with just spraying an aerosol disinfectant.

Disinfectants would kill the virus in an instant, and are typically done on both surfaces and in the air to prevent the spread of the disease. You and your co-workers are ready to tackle the next day’s work in a clean, virus-free office that is completely disinfected!

3. Limit the Number of Employees

Before the pandemic, employees would often be crammed in small spaces, and cubicles would not have much space between each other as the company maximizes space. However, it is now mandatory in many areas to limit the number of employees to a certain percentage.

Essentially, any employee who can do their work properly in their homes should be allowed to work from home as to limit the exposure of your workforce to the virus. Bringing your entire workforce into the office is a huge risk  not only to you and your co-workers, but sick employees cannot perform their duties properly, leading your company to a standstill.

4. Understand Proper Handwashing Techniques

Handwashing is one of the most basic forms of hygiene, yet an astonishing number of adults still do not know how to properly wash their hands! Take it upon yourself to understand the proper handwashing techniques, and educate your office on the importance of proper handwashing.

You should be scrubbing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, going over each area of your hands from your fingertips to your wrists. Research has proven that proper handwashing leads to better hygiene, and will cause you to get sick much less frequently.

5. Follow Proper Protocols – and Your Gut!

Last but not the least, follow proper protocols and guidelines as updated. The virus is constantly mutating and changing tactics, and part of our collective efforts to contain the infection is to adapt our defense against the virus as it shifts.

However, it is now mandatory in many areas to limit the number of employees to a certain percentage. With a limited number of employees, companies have control over less data, can make check stubs more easily, and reward existing employees better.

Follow proper WHO protocols, as well as the restrictions set by your local government. When in doubt, trust your gut to make the right decisions in maintaining a safe working environment for all employees. If you suspect a worker is ill, do not assume it’s a common cold or allergies, but have them tested immediately. Prevention is much better than treatment!
