How to Get Rid of Acne Scars

DenbeighBy DenbeighMarch 4, 2022

Almost everyone has experienced the embarrassment of an acne breakout. It is always unfortunate to have painful, red pimples on your face, especially when you are in the process of starting a new relationship or trying to get a job promotion. However, while acne breakouts are widespread for teenagers, they can also affect adults and even children. The most common complaint from both teenagers and adults is that they often feel very embarrassed about their acne scars once the zits have been treated with medication.

Although you can successfully treat acne scars at home, you may need to see a doctor for severe cases. Dr. Laura Riehm, a skin rejuvenation specialist, can recommend ideal treatments depending on your situation. In this article, we look at the different remedies you can benefit from.

  • Dermabrasion

It is one of the most popular ways to get rid of acne scars. Dermabrasion treatment involves sanding off the top layers of skin to reveal healthy skin underneath. You can have dermabrasion done by an experienced dermatologist either through chemical peels or microdermabrasion treatments.

  • Chemical Peels

These are often used to treat deep acne scars, especially on the neck or upper arms. Chemical peels soften or remove dead skin cells using salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and trichloroacetic acid. The downside associated with these types of acids is minimal, but they may cause irritation or swelling. You should never use a chemical peel if you have open wounds or infections on your face.

Chemical peels are done in a clinic service with significantly less pain and more significant results than at-home DIY versions that you can only perform twice every four weeks.

  • Microdermabrasion

It is a milder form of dermabrasion that uses fine crystals, but it’s also slightly more expensive than the other method. This treatment is often preferred by people who want to get rid of acne scars on their faces because this option leaves them with a natural glow instead of redness or irritation.

Microdermabrasion treatments are available at salons and spas worldwide, but it’s best to have one performed by an experienced professional. This treatment is recommended for people with light skin types because they are at greater risk of suffering damage due to the high-pressure level involved with microdermabrasion treatments.

  • Skin Needling

Some people also choose to get skin needling, which is a type of derma rolling treatment. However, you don’t have to use it in conjunction with dermabrasion or microdermabrasion. You can use it on its own or in combination with different acne medications or at-home remedies.

This procedure involves using a roller that contains hundreds of microneedles to penetrate your skin. The short needles in the roller stimulate collagen production, similar to how dermabrasion and microdermabrasion work.

Although it can be used on all parts of the body, this treatment is mostly famous for people who have acne scars on their faces. Dermatologists often use skin needling treatments as a way to improve the effectiveness of acne medications.

In summary, acne scars can cause a lot of embarrassment as they damage your appearance. You can get rid of them through skin needling, dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels.
