What to Do if You Lost Your Documents in Vietnam

RockBy RockOctober 28, 2022

Can you imagine what life would be like without our precious travel documents? Our passports let us see the world, travel to exotic foreign lands, and experience new cultures. So whether you’re a backpacker or a high-flying executive hopping from country to country, you should always take good care of your travel documents. And what happens when you lose your papers while traveling? There’s no need to panic right away. Everything’s going to be okay.

Losing Your Travel Papers in Vietnam: What to Do

Every country has its way of dealing with this issue – and it happens more often than you think. For the sake of clarity, this article describes what you need to do should you lose your passport in Vietnam.

Vietnam is a lovely country, but its local authorities are notorious for asking foreigners to produce their passports at any time. One way to protect yourself against the mess of bureaucracy is by keeping your passport separate from your other identification documents. Losing everything in one go makes things extra messy.

1. Make a Police Report

When you lose your passport in Vietnam, you need to obtain a new one containing an exit or replacement visa. To do that, you must first make a police report. The location of your report is key. You can’t walk into any police station willy-nilly. It has to be the one closest to where you lost your document.

The immigration authorities will only accept a police report. They won’t process an exit or replacement visa if you present them with a statutory declaration witnessed by your country’s consular official. In most cases, your embassy won’t be able to assist with the police report. However, you can get the assistance of your hotel or travel agent.

This step is crucial before you apply for another travel document. It’s also useful for you to get a copy of the police report. It will serve as evidence if you need to submit a claim with your insurance company.

2. Apply for an Emergency Passport

Depending on which country you hail from, the documents necessary for an emergency passport application will vary. In most cases, you will need the following:

  • Two passport-sized photos
  • All your personal identification documents (those containing your signature and photo are preferable)

Bring all your documents to your embassy or consulate and complete the necessary forms. Fees will apply. To know how much it will cost, check out your embassy or consulate’s website. Your emergency passport should be ready within a few working days. Your government might impose a restriction on the validity of your issued travel document.

3. Obtain Your Exit or Replacement Visa

Once you have your passport, your embassy or consulate will typically issue you a letter. This letter will be addressed to the Vietnamese immigration department, asking for the issuance of your exit or replacement visa. Without either of these visas, you will not have permission to leave the country. Again, a variable fee will apply.

If you are closer to Hanoi, you will proceed to 44-46 Tran Phu Street, Hanoi for your visa. Alternatively, those around Ho Chi Minh City will head on to 254 Nguyen Trai St, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. In both of these immigration offices, the people in charge might request that you lodge your application through your sponsoring organization. A new visa issuance takes about 3-7 days.
